‘A great course for knitters who collect things: pebbles or sticks from the beach, shells, post cards, stamps, bus tickets, and other small memorabilia’.
In October I am running an experimental knitting course at The Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead, inspired by the Susie Freeman Jacket in their collection, which will be on display in theexhibition –Collected Threads: Textiles from the Shipley Craft Collection.
If you have objects hidden away in drawers and boxes which are rarely seen and would you like to view these precious items more often but don’t know where to put them? Or if you are passionate about something and would like to express your views in a piece of knitted wall art encapsulating photographs, press cuttings, or even your own drawings ? This is the course for you!
You will be able to make a personal or social statement by incorporating your found or collected objects in a unique knitted window, wall hanging or small sculpture. You will be shown various ways of trapping the objects in the knitting which will include creating sealed pockets, working with objects with holes in them, and adding your items to a finished piece of knitted work. With the emphasis on design and experimentation you will produce a highly individual and original piece of art.
As the course will include knitting with yarns such as fine cottons and linen, and especially wire and monofilament; an experience of knitting is essential.
4 Wednesday afternoons: 1-4pm, Wednesday 3 – Wednesday 24 October
