Clarty artmaking in Creative Ouseburn

As the Festival of the North East draws to an end, here is a taster of the Ouseburn Valley’s creative output.

Creative Ouseburn, brought in some  visitors with a curiosity to explore venues such as  Northern Print, Toffee Factory, Seven Stories and 36 Lime Street Gallery with some amazing images captured by John Hipkin HERE.  One such visitor, Janet E Davis has recorded her experience HERE.

The trail around the valley was made possible by informative maps designed by Roots & Wings.  The  International Ministry of Play  came to the Ouseburn Valley to run a region-wide play survey in the travelling Festival of the North East bus.

The Hang Gallery @36 Lime Street Gallery – coming soon.

The Hang Gang is a collective of artists including Matthew Hearn, Sebastian Trend and Thomas Whittle. Interested in ideas of the poster and the printed /reproduced image, RIP presents a series of new works which draw together layers and elements of stolen, borrowed and plundered imagery. Using photocopies, traditional collage techniques and ultimately digital software to compose and layer content, RIP principally manifests as a series of posters which will both combine within the exhibition and be spread individually across the city. Remixing, and reworking source imagery through existing and newly formed conjunctions, these multi-dimensional elements will be further reconfigured in a series of assemblages within the gallery at 36 Lime Street.

The work presented as part of RIP has been developed through a recent aa2a (artists access to art colleges) residency at Northumbria University.

Surprise visitors in the valley.

Setting up

Setting up

Creative Ouseburn @36 Lime Street brought some surprise visitors to the Valley. Visiting next door neighbours Seven Stories Gordon Brown and family were spotted early on going into the Centre for Childrens book and emerged some hours later (after a torrential down pour), happy to pose for a quick photo, but no time to come into the gallery and write on the wall!

Visitor numbers this Sunday were higher than expected (over 50) considering the appalling weather, but once in the gallery visitors were happy to spend time and chat to the artists making work and providing have a go activities.  Its Play Time  bus provided welcome and dry reprieve for parents and guardians escaping the down pours.

The festival of the North East celebrates the regions innovations and creativity with a programme of events throughout June 2013, involving arts, heritage, creative industries, museums and engineering. As well as showcasing the North East, the festival also heralds the arrival of the Lindisfarne Gospels, which begin a 3 month residency at Durham University.
“During the 4th weekend in June, I’ll be giving a demonstration of my working practice, alongside other 36 Lime Street artists in the 36 Lime Street Gallery. I’ve been working on a thumbnail biro sketch of the many Bridges of the Ouseburn, which I plan to paint during the gallery opening. Painting the Ouseburn Valley and it’s distinctive bridges lends itself perfectly to the Festival, with its heavily industrial past, giving way to the creative industries in the present. I also wanted to celebrate the Glasshouse and Byker Bridges, both of which have spanned the Ouseburn for 135 years.”

Print maker Theresa Easton incites a direct, handwritten response from audiences with her emotive exploration of historical, social and politically driven forms of printed material. Broadsides and Broadsheets historically were single sheets of paper printed on one side with either ballads, announcing events, proclamations or advertisements, often pinned in taverns and cottages.

For Creative Ouseburn, Easton’s broadsides and broadsheets respond to the growing discontent in the North East to the national austerity measures imposed on sections of the community by our current government.  Quotes and paraphrase’s, rants and reminiscence by members of the public will be captured and reformed into hard copies and printed using tradition wooden type.
